Why is this sheet for ages 5–6?

Counting backwards prepares the ground for subtraction – and it is much harder than counting up.

  • The first row is the model and stays untouched.
  • The second row has four gaps, the third has eight.
  • Ten and five stay in place as anchors.

💬 Tip for parents

Children muddle counting backwards even when counting up is fluent – that is normal. Everyday countdowns help: steps going down, ten seconds before a start. For the third row, let the child use the first row above it.
