Free printable lowercase letter tracing worksheets
Twelve lowercase letter tracing worksheets sorted by age: the whole small alphabet on one page, letter rows a to z, a separate sheet for the letters with tails below the line, and words to trace.
Lowercase letters sit between three lines, not two. The top line is for the tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t), the dashed middle line holds the height of all the others, and the tails of g, j, p, q and y drop below the baseline. The brown dot is where the stroke starts, the numbered arrow shows its direction and order.
For ages 3–4 the letters are 20 to 22 mm tall, for ages 4–5 15 to 19 mm, for ages 5–6 11 to 16 mm. Every age group has four sheets and one bundle in a single PDF.

Questions parents ask
When should a child learn lowercase letters?
Usually after capitals. Capitals all stand between two lines and have no tails, so the hand finds them easier. Lowercase comes next, when the child writes whole words – in first grade both are used side by side.
Why do the sheets have three lines?
The dashed middle line marks the height of a small letter. It shows the child that b reaches the top line while o stops at the dashed one. Without it the letters wander and each one ends up a different size.
Which letters cause the most trouble?
The pairs b and d, p and q – they differ only in the side the bowl is on. It helps to practise them apart and never one after the other. The other group is the letters with tails (g, j, p, q, y), where the stroke carries on below the baseline; they have a sheet of their own here.
How do I print them?
On A4 or US Letter paper, at actual size (100 %) and in black and white. Print a sheet as often as you like – one letter for several days in a row is the point.
